Halloween Retail Catalogs Arrive!

Some sizzlin hot new Halloween decor catalogs are out as the spook season is in full swing.

Illuminations is showing many of the same items as last year, but has added a few new haunted mansion-glowing tea light houses (and a cool spooky tree) that are neat- a collection of these houses with the black picket fencing would look fantastic on a mantel. They also have a super cool raven candle this year, and I love the small votive holders in candleabra, skeleton and raven.

Pottery Barn used to have a fantastic Halloween collection, but it has become a bit skeletonized in recent years. This year, though, they are showing a very ghoul table place setting collection featuring glittery skulls. The martini set with the skeleton heads is also creeptastic and would be great for serving drinks at a Halloween party. Also spooktacular- the bone stand and punch bowl- perfect for party service.

The Fright Catalog rocks once again. Their website is great too- this year they have tons of product videos so you can check out which of the $2,000-30,000 animatronics you'd like to buy. Also, if you're looking for a SCARY costume this is one-stop, best-out-there shopping. They also have a disturbing number of bloody body parts for those fo you who are into that sort of thing...

Also freshly minted is the Grandinroad catalog- by far my favorite Halloween home decor catalog. They just get it right every year- and their stuff gets better each year. Super classy, nothing (but a few goofy skeleton poses) cheesy. Truly the perfect indoor and outdoor Halloween decor could be achieved in one-stop shopping at Grandinroad. Their online shop is also fantastic and includes everything from the catalog. Some of my favorites this year? The spider pods (they stole it from Martha Stewart from last year, but they've perfected it and you don't have to make them yourself), huge mummy hands, cloaked woman, and super-cool, inexpensive accessory of the year? The Halloween bottle labels pictured. Grandinroad takes the Best Halloween catalog prize for 2008- if you haven't gotten it, GET it!

What are some of the best
Halloween websites on the
(air quotes) "Web?"

There are a ton of Halloween websites, but how to you know which websites are best for all your tricks and treats? Good content, easy online shopping, trustworthy shipping, and other factors combine to create the perfect Halloween experience online Here are a few sites that won't disappoint enthusiastic ghouls and goblins.

Best Halloween Websites: Costumes

There are many places to buy Halloween costumes online. Lillian Vernon is the best Halloween website for inexpensive, creative kids' costumes. Anytime Costumes also has an excellent site with many costume choices. But probably the best site on the internet for Halloween costumes is buycostumes. With an amazing selection of costumes in categories such as Couples, TV & Movie characters, Historical, Classic, and Sexy, buycostumes definitely has the best selection of adult costumes, not to mention a huge choice for teens and kids as well. Prices are good and shipping is lightning fast.

Best Decorations/Party Sites

So you're having a Halloween party? Whether it's cute party with bat pinata for kids, or a grownup Masquerade Ball, there are websites that cater to everyone Boo Bash need. For kids' trick or treat party needs, some of the best goodies can be found at sites including Oriental Trading, Shindigz and a lesser known Halloween website at Factory Card which has great party stuff and excellent low prices on Halloween.

Spooky Halloween: Really Scary Stuff

Ok, beyond cute trick-or-treat goodies and cheerful pumpkin carving ideas, there is the really creepy, spooky, borderline grotesque Halloween stuff. We're talking, crying kids too scared to go up to your door and knock, here. The basics can be found (even a category called 'Blood, Pus and Snot,' for crying out loud) at scarydecorations. A truly spooky Halloween website is horrordome which is a scary experience just visiting the site itself! If you are putting together a pro Haunted House and will be spending 4-digit figures on animatronics, this site is for you. Finally, one of the best of the best for Halloween website shopping is frightcatalog. Though many sites may say they are, Fright Catalog is truly an amazing Halloween Hauntquarters.

It becomes overwhelming to the zealous Halloween web shopper to visit so many sites, especially when print catalogs arriving in the mail almost every day. One tip is to set up 'wish lists' on several of your favorite Halloween websites, then move items to your cart when you simply 'have' to have them! Choose a Halloween budget so you don't run up every credit card.

Another essential cost-saving tip is to pick out the props, decorations or costumes that are must-haves, and comparison shop on ebay. You can save a bunch of money getting Halloween tricks and treats for less from trusted ebay vendors- check their feedback and shipping costs so you don't get ripped off.

Halloween Tricks and Treats Magazine:
Better Homes and Gardens Publication Does Halloween Justice for '08

So, did you hear Martha Stewart ISN'T DOING A special HALLOWEEN publication this year?! The October Living is serving as the only Halloween sugar  from the Halloween diva for 2008. So those of us who are jonesing for glossy Halloween sweetness on our coffee tables, thank goodness Better Homes and Gardens has put out Halloween Tricks and Treats.

The magazine features articles on a "Home Sweet Haunted Home" gingerbread house, cool pumpkin carving ideas, throwing a Hollywood-themed Halloween, a classy, artistic article on Spooky Silhouettes, and my personal favorite of the bunch, an article called Halloween Past & Present (see photo below) about a guy who collects and recreates vintage Halloween artwork.

So, the Halloween Tricks and Treats magazine is definitely worth seeking at your grocery checkout stand. For $5.99, it's the best Halloween 'fix' I've found in print so far this year!
